Genesis themes support footers with various numbers of columns.
To configure footer widgets on your Genesis site, add the below line of code to your theme functions, indicating the number of columns you want. For example, you can get a 3-column footer with this code:
or a single-column footer with this code:
Delete this line to remove the footer widget area from your site altogether.
Then, to add content to your multi-column (or single-column) footer, you go to Appearance > Widgets in your admin area. The columns are represented by Footer 1, Footer 2 etc, and you can drag widgets to them.
The footer widgets markup structure is as follows for HTML5 and XHTML respectively.
Note that your child theme is responsible for styling the footer widget columns.
